What is keto about? Trading cravings for health.

What is keto about? The short answer is: A low carb, high fat diet that focuses more on the quality of the foods that you put into your body.

Can you lose weight with keto? Yes definitely and I.M.H.O. it is the best diet to lose weight.

But to me Keto is so much more than just losing weight, especially now that I am getting older.

Many times we see slender and fit people drop dead from a hearth attack. Most of the ones that did survive them would get to know later that their coronary artery was clogged.

Do you remember Bob Harper? The trainer on the biggest Loser show. He was always in shape and supposedly ate healthy. Now how did that happened to him?

I was never thought that I would ever adopt a diet that is so restrictive as the keto diet, but the more I educated myself on this diet the more sense it made to me.

I have to honestly say that I do eat carbs about once a month (yes the bad ones, cake, ice cream, milk chocolate). I also do believe that we have to enjoy life also, right?

But overall Keto has made my life way easier regarding my diet, let me tell you why.

Keto is just common sense.

If you look at what the human race has accomplished over the last two hundred years regarding the foods that we buy and eat is amazing and destructive all at the same time.

I do understand that companies have to keep up with demand, but they are not keeping our health in mind.

Our ancestors never had luxuries that we have these days. Fast food restaurants, microwave dinners, cereals, pop tarts and much more.

They had some greens, berries, grains and meat, that’s it! And on top of having almost none of the choices we have today, that had to also hunt and harvest to food their selves.

Now, I do have to say that grains like wheat, rice, oats have also been around way before our time, but was not so heavily consumed like it is now. About 90% of all products in the supermarket has some form of grain (corn, barley, rice, oats, whole wheat) and other types of high carbohydrate ingredient in them.

Many items may seem healthy because we fall into the marketing trap. Beautiful models eating Kellog’s Corn flakes or drinking an ice-cold Coca Cola. These commercials tend to make you believe that people can eat and drink these things as much as they want and still be healthy and slim.

The latest crazy was the fat free items. Low fat, no saturated fat and so on. What do they replace the fat with? SUGAR!!

Keto is indeed very restricted if you take in account all the choices of foods that we do have at our finger tips today. I had a hard time giving up on the foods that I loved. Bread, rice, french fries are some amongst my favorite foods. But in order to be healthy I had to do something.

Exercising every day did not cut it anymore. I used to exercise 6 days a week just to maintain my weight. I tried almost every diet out there until I came across the Keto diet 2 years ago.

Just by simply eating whole foods, except for maybe some processed foods like cheese and low carb crackers (naturally processed), made me lose weight effortless. I now workout about 3 to 4 times a week and have lost over 25 pounds and the best thing, kept it off. I could never maintain those other diets.

When you are young and have a good metabolism your body can handle almost anything. As you get older you have less energy, more stress and just too many things on your mind.

The late night fast food commercials aren’t a great help either.

There you are trying to keep food out of your mind until the next day, and then come on the Dunkin Doughnuts and Burger King commercials. Your tummy is growling and you feel like just slapping anyone right then and there if they even mention food. You begin to ask yourself:”Why am I doing this right now, suffering! I am gonna die someday, might as well have great time now” right? This is when you give in.

You might feel great in your younger years, but before you know it you are nearing 40. Then come the aces and pains of even getting out of bed, walking up stairs and other simple things you could have done back in the day with ease, but struggle with now. The aces and pains are easy remedied by prescription pain killers. But it does not treat the core of the problem. The doctor does tell you to lose some weight, but how?


Cravings control is the answer.

I know what food is to an obese person, I used to be one. Food was my master and I the slave. Cravings controlled my life. I could not just eat a meal and stay OK, I had to eat until I felt stuffed. I only cared about the quantity of the food. My wife being never obese did not understand when I ate until I felt stuffed.

Many people won’t admit this but, I would never sit down when first entering a buffet Restaurant, you know when the waitress shows you to your table. I would rush to the buffet and fill my plate as if the food was going to disappear. Seeing people taking food from the buffet would make me nervous that there would not be anything left for me anymore. Now, I sit, relax and even converse with the people at the table, instead of just having my face planted in my plate.

This is what sets Keto apart from any other form of weight loss out there.

Craving control is what is going to make you lose the weight and keep it off.

By eating high fat and low carb your body stays satiated for a long time. As your appetite drops, so will your weight.

But weight loss is only the beginning. As you lose weight and it gets easier to go a long while without food, you can really home in on the quality foods.

In the beginning you are going to curse, feel ill, have bad moods and doubting yourself if you should be eating all these foods and why. The first 2 months were really hard on me. Just focus on it and trust me when I say that you will come out on the other side.

On the other side you will have control over your appetite and see the scale tip in your favor. Compliments will start coming let and right. People will be asking you what your secret is.

It is not as bad as people say it is.

Sure you have to give up on many yummy sugary things. But what is your health worth to you?

Getting out of bed in the morning without feeling stiffness and pains is more than enough reason for me.

Keto gets rid of inflammation to a certain degree and just makes you feel better.

I can not put every single thing I have learned over the years of being in keto or else this article would be too long.

When you are on keto you do not even have to restrict calories. Eating until satiated is key in the beginning. Eating steaks and sour cream is my kind of diet.



If you have never been overweight or obese, keto can become a great way to become healthier (remember Bob Harper?).

If you can muster the will to keep going until you’ve reached the “other side” of keto (keto flu and intense cravings), you will lose weight and become way healthier.

Having the right mindset is key to success. Everything in life worth doing or accomplishing start with determination.

This has been my experience since I started keto 2 years and 2 months ago. It has nor been easy in the beginning and I still have cravings sometimes. Still, I feel awesome on keto and that is not going to change in the foreseeable future.
